Default W/P build for PvE viable?

Pretty much in the subject is the question.

I'm currently a W/P 14 and I'm curious if I should just turn in the towel and remake my character with a better secondary class. I've tried some of the motivation skills but none of them really stand out, and I haven't found a nice spear yet so I haven't switched to that either.

I haven't seen any posts with a W/P build so I know it doesn't look good for me. I have found a lot of P/W builds though

I'd run a W/P as I would run any warrior - all warrior attributes... But with [skill]Remedy Signet[/skill] for condition removal. It doesn't matter much though, it isn't all too far till you can change your secondary.

Spears, with a max of 12 mastery, aren't all too powerful on a warrior (Strength sucks for making them more powerful).

if you're at lvl 14 you probably dont have any weapon runes anyway.... I would just run a spear build until you get to a place where you can change secondary... use the strength line for ias and such...

chucking spears from afar is easier to progress than frontline melee (assuming that you do not have runes)

<<aren't all too powerful on a warrior (Strength sucks for making them more powerful).>>

Not to mention I didn't know those spears were thrown. I thought it was a melee weapon.

<<chucking spears from afar is easier to progress than frontline melee (assuming that you do not have runes)>>

But being a ranged attacker kinda makes all that armor totally useless though doesn't it?

I was unaware of being able to change secondary class...when does that become available?

As an Elonan character... Once you get to the Sunspear Sanctuary, you can change your secondary at either the Command Post (right outside) or the Great Temple of Balthazar. The sanctuary is one quick primary quest after reaching Kourna by doing the Consulate Docks mission.

Here's a decent W/P build that I've been playing around with:

Axe/Sword Mastery 11+1+1 = 13
Tactics 10+1 = 11
Motivation 10

[Elite Weapon Attack Skill]
[Weapon Attack Skill]
[Weapon Attack Skill]
[Weapon Attack Skill]
Chorus of Restoration
Watch Yourself!
Healing Signet
Ressurection Signet (or Signet of Return)

The combination of Chorus and Watch Yourself allows you gain an automatic 140 health every 6 seconds (or so) at no energy cost. That is pretty nice, and gives some relief to pausing your actions to blast Healing Signet.

You can always replace the Motivation line with a simple Signet of Aggression, which is a very nice adrenaline builder by spamming Watch Yourself.

[skill]Hexbreaker Aria[/skill]

The skill is in Leadership, yet it's actually unlinked. I use this skill often on my warrior. You can build up adrenaline easy with Flail, so this skill is great for party support. If you're a tactics person. combine it with "Shields up" and "Watch Yourself".

So that build is for level 20 right? and assuming that you have all 3 games? (core/night/factions) I'm not really sure how this game works with it's different "expansions" but at level 14 and with a skill of 11 in axe I only have like 3 skills available to me.

Not sure what the deal is with that, but I only have Nightfall so maybe that has something to do with it.

Thanks you guys for the input though, I really needed some guidance on this, or to just be pointed in a direction.

So far this game is pretty cool/unique. Coming from EQ2 it's a nice break to play a less complicated game.

Finale of Restoration is a nice skill to mix in with things like Go For The Eyes, Watch Yourself!, and Shields Up, to give healing to you, and any party members you give this to.
Chorus of Restoration works well as well.

I certainly would stick to sword, axe or hammer as a weapon. Id stick 12 in a weapon mastery, 8-10 in tactics/strength and 8-10 in Command/Motivation (not counting runes/headpiece bonusses). Just mess around with the skills abit till you find something which suits you, with core and NF skills there are plenty of possibilities.

If you made a build you can allways post it here to get feedback

And Certainly dont trow the towel in the ring

welcome to GW.... I already have 6 lvl 20 characters so I find starting a new character kinda draggin.... thats why I sugested going spear....

1. get heroes/henchis
2. chuck spears sending them into the fray first
3. keep playing till you 'ascend' then change secondary and buy some runes...

that's at least the 'safest' way to do things

until you are level 20... you can disregard most of the 'elitism' comments in this forum and do what works

You can definitely make the above build work, even with a level 14.

Just reduce your Axe and Tactics attribute level down to match your Shield and Axe's requirements, and try to keep a good amount of points in Motivation for the healing.

All of the skills I listed above are available in Nightfall, so you should be able to compile it without any problem. If you don't have an axe elite, just replace it with a normal axe attack.

I would use...

Sever Artery
Gash
Galrath Slash
Signet of Return (I mean the res thingy, w/e it's called)
Go For The Eyes!
Enraging Charge
Flail
Standing Slash

for a warrior/paragon on the island.
Pump your weapon as high as you can, stick the leftovers in Strength and Command. Go For The Eyes! is hot, especially if you put it on Koss too. And Jin. And maybe Dunkoro. Motivation is for wussies.

::EDIT::
Against undead, you really wanna throw out sever and gash for other attacks or "For Great Justice!". You might also want to replace one of your attacks with Bull's Strike for those kiting casters. Keen Arrow on Jin with a GftE build is great.

ok good to know that this can work!

As far as skills go, when I go to the skills trainer in Kamadan, he only has like 3 axe skills available (I have a gold axe which is why I switched to axe) what's the secret to getting more skills? Is it in quests? Cuz I've done quite a few quests and none of them had skills as rewards. I've also never seen any drop off of monsters either.

I'm also speced in Strength at the moment, but that can change to tactics (I think I've changed my skills 5-6 times since I've started!)

I must say I dig the axe/shield combo, I love the cyclone axe skill and I seem to do quite a bit of damage with axe compared to the hammer that I used to use.

Oh and last question: Is there some sort of "taunt" skill in this game? I have a hard time with mob management as a tank in this game.

Skills in Elona can be found at skill trainers (I believe there's other trainers as well on Istan) and also at Hero Skill Trainers - use hero skill points you gather through rising sunspear/lightbringer ranks to buy skills for you and your heroes to use. Also, you can unlock skills using Balthazar Faction gained in PvP battles, and skills unlocked in this manner can be bought at any skill trainer.

And on 'taunt' - there is no taunt skill in GW. It's hard to keep enemies attacking the warrior as they'll pretty much always switch to a softer target.
It's not a biggie though... Tanking is lame, boring, and unneeded in 99.9% of GW. The areas were it is needed (such as the Domain of Anguish) have specific tank builds and the warrior tanks foes with bodyblocking and rounding up foes outside of aggro as much as he does with skills. For the most part though... a 'tank' on a team is simply a deadweight that does no damage (who probably uses lam e skills like Mending too ).

<<Skills in Elona can be found at skill trainers>>

Okay, now I know about these guys, but they've only offered the same 3 skills for axe which I've bought. I guess it's an unlocking through levelling thing then eh? Or do different trainers give different skills?

Thanks again everyone for the advice...I know that this thread has turned topics twice already, but I appreciate all the advice I can get.

Man this game is different from what I'm used to. (not that it's a bad thing though!)

different skill trainers give different skills..... you can also use the skills from hero trainers....and capture skills from bosses (including elite skills) with the signet of capture skill....

in the core chapter "prophecies" you can earn them with skill quests....

no problem... If you want I could help you capture an elite skill... how far are you into the game?

if you are as far as arjok ward you can get an elite there....(and signet of capture you can get in the command post after the prerequisite quests)

also you can get [card]cleave[/card] from 'chor' in marga coast....

but all this is on the mainland...if you havent gotten there yet...dont worry 'bout it
